The series of work begins with the best efforts of humanity and how
despite even the best intentions, the world is still full of injustice and
suffering. In this painting an apple and a pear are claimed to be equal
when in fact they are not. In a similar way it is not just to pretend there is
equality amongst all people when there is not, or even to show partiality
in (bias) in judgment. This picture raises the question as to whether there
is such a thing as true fairness in humanity.
This painting is based on the old phrase “Two wrongs don’t make a right”.As visually shown, the one right (tick) outweighs the two wrongs (crosses). This also draws on the idea that revenge is not an effective solution for creating peace as revenge only fuels more anger and revenge.
Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. (Romans 12:17-18)
